What is Kisspeptin?

Kisspeptin-10 is the shortest biologically active C-terminal fragment (10 amino acids) of kisspeptin (also known as metastin), encoded by the KISS1 gene. It acts as a potent agonist at the KISS1R (GPR54) receptor in the hypothalamus, serving as a key upstream regulator (“master switch”) of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion. This triggers downstream release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland.

Originally identified in metastasis research, it is now a primary tool in reproductive endocrinology studies due to its role in puberty onset, fertility, and hormonal signaling.
